A Kathakali actor takes an hour to paint the face green, then plays a whole god in nothing but eyes and fingertips. Down the road the Kalari fighters spar by torchlight. Fort Kochi is quiet after dark, but its stages are wide awake.

Kerala within a day’s reach.
